Monthly Song Spotlight

Feb 2023 - Her Diamonds by Rob Thomas

The phrase "her diamonds" is a metaphor for tears.

Rob Thomas explained that "It's actually a song about a girl who is very ill. It's a song about empathy and dealing with that with someone you love." The Matchbox Twenty frontman is referring to his wife Mari, who suffers from a rare autoimmune disease.

The chorus that I relate to the most is when he sings :

And she says, "Ooh, I can't take no more"
Her tears like diamonds on the floor
And her diamonds bring me down
'Cause I can't help her now
She's down in it
She tried her best and now she can't win
It's hard to see them on the ground
Her diamonds falling down

I think we can all relate to "I can't take no more!" That's just how we all feel at our hard moments.

For any Spoonie Warriors partners who relate to this from the perspective of watching someone you love struggle, please know how much it means to us just having you there with us. Listening. Holding us. Touching us gently. Caring. Loving us. We appreciate you.

March 2023 - Unwell by Matchbox 20

This song, though preformed by Matchbox 20, was also written by Rob Thomas. Mr. Thomas said he wrote the song about having a despondent relationship with yourself and about not feeling comfortable in your own skin. A lot of people think this song is only about depression, which I feel a huge portion of Spoonie Warriors struggle with also. But the song is even deeper than that once you know why he wrote it. These are the part of the lyrics that speak the deepest to me;

All day starin' at the ceilin' makin'

Friends with shadows on my wall

All night hearing voices tellin' me

That I should get some sleep

Because tomorrow might be good for somethin'

Hold on, feelin' like I'm headed for a breakdown

And I don't know why

But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell

I know, right now you can't tell

But stay a while and maybe then you'll see

A different side of me.

I relate to this so much because when he says "all day, staring at the ceiling ... all night hearing voices telling me that I should get some sleep" I think of my insomnia and how many nights I've lain awake all night wishing that I could fall asleep when I was unable to. Arguing with myself all the while. Also, the part where he says "I know, right now you can't tell. But stay a while and maybe then you'll see a different side of me." That is significant to me because I think we have ALL had someone say to us "but you don't look sick" and whilst it is frustrating to hear those words the truth is that WE are part of the reason that "we don't look sick"! What do I mean? Well, we do our best when we have to go out in public or out to family or friends functions to try to LOOK as good as we can. We do our best to try to APPEAR like we are "normal" well functioning people. But the people who "stay a while''' or live with us and see us every day, those people get to really SEE us and see the pain we deal with daily.

Can YOU relate to any of these lyrics? Do YOU have a song you would like to see featured in a Song of the Week? What is YOUR Fibromyalgia or Spoonie Warrior song? Feel free to send us a comment.

April 2023 - 92 Weird Diseases by Magnetic Fields

This is a kooky little song that I found that just sounds like so many people with Fibromyalgia!

Even though it wasn't written about Fibromyalgia it fits for us, as well as bringing awareness to several other spoonie conditions.

In this song he mentions epilepsy (my nephew Xayden), Renal Cysts, Aspergers, Pityriasis Rosea, Giardia, hiccups (which I once struggled with daily for about 3 years), Hyperacusis, Chronic Fatigue (if you are a Spoonie I am sure you have this), COPD and Migraines!!! I feel like people who don't get chronic migraines just can't relate to how debilitating migraines are.

The reason I share this song isn't just because of how many Spoonie conditions it mentions, but how well I feel all of us can relate to having "weird diseases".

I always say I have Fibromyalgia, etc... because it seems like once you have Fibromyalgia you just become a magnet for all sorts of other wierd dieases.

If you have a song you would like to see shared as our Song of the Week please fell free to drop us an email!
